There are various stages of training in southern kalaripayattu such as partner training, solo forms, short stick, knife, long stick, sword and shield, double sword, flexible sword and pressure points. Southern Kalaripayattu has various laws also. Such as law of hitting, hitting vital spots and art of varma. Weapons in these include bamboo staves, double deer horns and short sticks.
- Central Kalaripayattu: This technique is practiced in main parts of north Kerala. The techniques used in these are very diverse in nature and emphasis is laid on the application. It focuses on lower body strength. Madhya Kalari is its other name.
