  2. Southern Kalaripayattu: Varma Kalai of Tamil Nadu is Southern Kalaripayattu. South Kerala is main center. Asaan are the masters of these art. There are various stages of training in southern kalaripayattu such as partner training, solo forms, short stick, knife, long stick, sword and shield, double sword, flexible sword and pressure points. Southern Kalaripayattu has various laws also. Such as law of hitting, hitting vital spots and art of varma. Weapons in these include bamboo staves, double deer horns and short sticks.
  3. Central Kalaripayattu: This technique is practiced in main parts of north Kerala. The techniques used in these are very diverse in nature and emphasis is laid on the application. It focuses on lower body strength. Madhya Kalari is its other name.

Kalaripayattu Techniques

The techniques used in Kalaripayattu are combination of two things. The first is Chuvatu and the second is Vadivu. Chuvatu are the steps and vadivu are the postures. Chuvatu and Vadivu are basic steps of martial arts as well as basic characteristics of Kalaripayattu training. These styles are named after animals and these are usually eight in number.
